SUPER FUTURE KID

March 3 - March 19, 2020

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, an eight year old Steffi Homa- now also known as Super Future Kid, caught her first glimpse of abundance and excess in the form of bright, stylized cartoons, video games and oversized plush toys- all densely saturated in color. Overwhelmed by the bounty of a Western childhood long denied, Homa internalized these visual elements and began to articulate them as a practicing artist. Empowered by an artistic nom de plume that defies gender and age, Homa crafts a world defined by her personal style and creative identity, a post digital heroine with a gift for humor and wit expressed through large scale paintings, sculptures and installations.

Inspired by the Medieval tome, The Land of Cockaigne, Homa collaborates with visionary curator Che’ Morales to create a micro-universe of glutinous abundance. Homa’s rai·son d'ê·tre is defined by the belief in something better. Cockaigne is the perfect metaphor, a dangling carrot of sorts; a projected vision of a more prosperous future- with untold culinary delights.

In “Two for Me, None for You”, Homa and Morales spare no expense. Real gingerbread, 2500 pounds of salt and gallons of pastel paint simulate the perfect paradise. Toad stools, a foot bridge over sparking pink water and mythical creatures of unknown origin transport the viewer, if only briefly, to a place of joy. Like our ancestors of old, it’s a welcome reprieve from a harsh reality. The perfect visual metaphor for a challenging  time.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Super Future Kid was born in east Germany is 1981 where she spent the first 8 years of her life completely unaware of the western world. The culture shock that followed the fall of the Berlin wall left a great impression on her and played an important role in her love for bold colours, toys and everything joyful and playful.

She attended the Chelsea Collage of Art and Design and the Academy of Art Berlin Weissensee. Since her graduation in 2008, she has shown her work in several group and solo shows nationally and internationally including London, New York, Berlin and Los Angeles.

Employing bold shapes and colors her work explores a wide range of subjects that all circulate around certain ideas of childhood and youth and provides a platform which is emotionally engaging and gives the observer an opportunity to discover an alternate dreamlike reality of themselves.
